Rusty's Big Dig

This blog entry is about Rusty’s Big Dig: the why, how, what, and all the questions you could possibly have.

Why a Poodle?

Why not? Who doesn’t love a story about a dog? Better yet, who doesn’t love a true story about a fluffy red dog? That is exactly what Rusty’s Big Dig is.

People—especially me—have a love relationship with animal books. I mean, look at me. As you can see, I have already written a few of them, such as Jackie the Jumping Gerbil and Wintertime in Timothy Hollow. There will be plenty more of that to come, but I am getting ahead of myself.

Back to Rusty’s Big Dig!

Who Is Rusty?

Rusty just happens to be a sweet, playful red poodle that my in-laws take care of. Notice I did not say the word own. I happen to believe that the animals in our care own us.

He loves to do the things that many dogs do, such as exploring the outdoors, going for walks, eating treats, doing tricks, and receiving love from his dutiful owners. Did I mention snacks? Yeah, Rusty really, really likes those—especially if they come in the form of cheese or hot dogs.

He can even sneeze on command if he is promised said hot dog or cheese.

Rusty, the Excavator Dog

Rusty has a peculiar habit of hopping up into the seat of his owner’s excavator. Last winter, this photo was shared with me. I knew I had to turn that moment into a story about Rusty.

I was shown the picture around the same time that the dog was diagnosed with a terminal health condition. Sadly, he was given a short time to live.

I set to work immortalizing Rusty in his very own children’s book. I am happy to say that he is doing very well and has lived well past the prediction of how long he would survive.

What Is the Story About?

Rusty’s Big Dig is about a young puppy who was born into a big litter. All of his brothers and sisters know exactly what they are good at, but the little red poodle has no clue.

So he sets out on an adventure when he escapes his owner’s house to explore the neighborhood. All he wants to know is what kind of dog he will become.

He meets several friends along his journey, including a mail dog, a firehouse dog, and much more.

E.R. the Caterpillar

Rusty is not alone in his search for self-discovery. Along the way, he meets a silly blue-green caterpillar who both guides him and seems to get into plenty of mischief himself.

What exactly does E.R. stand for? Why, Early Riser, of course!

Now, if you’re thinking about the saying “the early bird gets the worm,” you may notice something funny about that. E.R. seems to have misunderstood the assignment entirely.

He heard “get up early and good things will happen!” and ran with it—apparently missing the small detail that the saying is meant for birds, not worms or caterpillars.

Fortunately for E.R., Timothy Hollow doesn’t have many birds looking for breakfast.

Why Should You Read It?

Simply because it’s funny, sweet, and heartwarming. I can guarantee that you will be laughing as much as a child would be. E.R. will keep you in stitches with the scrapes he gets into, with Rusty right by his side.

Rusty’s Big Dig is best suited for readers ages 5–7, or younger listeners who enjoy being read to.

So if you're ready to join a curious puppy and a mischievous caterpillar on their adventure, Rusty and E.R. would love to have you along for the dig.
